This article was originally one of a set of memoranda available only on paper in The National Archives' reading rooms. It acted as a signpost to records of interest on a particular historical subject. It may have been compiled many years ago and could be out of date. Please feel free to edit this page to improve the information

This memorandum was originally in March 1995 and revised to January 2003

In 1865, a Welsh speaking colony, called in Welsh "Y Wladfa" ("The Colony"), was established in the valley of the Chubut River in Patagonia in Argentina. The original emigrants sailed from Liverpool on the Mimosa. In the 1880's, a further colony was established in the foothills of the Andes and this was called "Cwm Hyfryd" ("Pleasant Valley"). Although measures were later taken to remove some of the colonists to Canada and South Africa, most of the settlers and their descendants remained in Argentina.

Please note that outwards passenger lists for destinations outside Europe are now searchable online at ancestorsonboard. Researchers interested in the history of Welsh emigration to Patagonia should search under the name of any emigrant leaving any British port for ARGENTINA and PUERTO (or PORT) MADRYN. If a common name such as Jones or Edwards is used then such a search will bring up their names and the names of other emigrants travelling with them.
